Intermodal Industry Urges Senate HELP Committee’s Support for Independent Contractor Model
CALVERTON, MD (July 17, 2025) – Today, the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions held a hearing titled, “Freedom to Work: Unlocking Benefits for Independent Workers.” The hearing examined opportunities to improve federal labor law by clarifying the definition of an independent contractor and strengthening their ability to access workplace benefits. ӽ紫ý (ӽ紫ý) President & CEO Anne Reinke offered the following statement:
“The independent contractor model is indispensable to the intermodal industry, as over 80 percent of truck drivers supporting intermodal freight movement have chosen to carry out their work as independent contractors. These drivers have invested heavily in their own training and equipment, working tirelessly not only to move the nation’s freight but also to pursue their dream of business ownership. Independent workers enjoy maximum flexibility and control over their own schedules, routes, and income, all while pursuing their chosen career path. The ӽ紫ý encourages the Senate HELP Committee to legislate a clear, consistent, and permanent definition for independent contractors – such as Chairman Cassidy and Senator Scott’s Modern Worker Empowerment Act, S. 2228 – to ensure that these men and women can continue participating in the economy in a way that best fits their personal goals and circumstances.”
ӽ紫ý submitted testimony for the record, which can be found here.
